A 19-year-old retail worker from Melbourne, Victoria, Shaun describes himself as someone “who is just looking to create the best life for himself”. This desire has driven him to build a share portfolio of over $21,000, roughly the equivalent of his entire year’s wage, at a young age.

How long have you been investing for and what got you started?

I’ve been investing for 7 months and I got started because I wanted to use my savings in the smartest way possible.

What’s your investment strategy? How much do you invest and how often?

My strategy is to invest mostly into ETFs. I try to have around two-thirds of my portfolio in diversified funds and the rest in blue chips or companies I am passionate about such as Tesla. I regularly invest $200 a week and occasionally invest larger one-off sums when I see a good opportunity.

What are your financial goals?

I want to become financially self-sufficient and have a strong enough stream of passive income to enjoy life without having to worry about anything.

What’s in your portfolio?

For ETFs, I like A200 (Betashares top 200 ETF), iShares global 100 ETF,  Betashares US tech giants and a few others. When it comes to companies I like Tesla, the Commonwealth Bank, Allkem, Endeavour Group, Li-s Energy, and Qantas.

What is the company/sector/ETF that gets you the most excited?

The lithium and battery industry

If I gave you $5,000 right now, what are you buying?

Allkem, a global lithium company with projects across Australia, Argentina, Japan and Canada.

What’s the best trade you’ve made?

Buying Tesla the day before it shot up 12%.

What’s the worst trade you’ve made?

Buying Li-S energy right after its October IPO when it was pumping massively. The day after I bought it the stock price dropped dramatically. Many months later and it has only fallen further.

What’s the biggest financial mistake you made?

Not opening a minor trading account so I could invest earlier. I missed out on most of the gains of the last two years

Do you have any investing regrets?

I just wish I had started sooner!

Where did you learn about investing and where do you get your information from now?

I initially learnt about trading through various YouTubers, but now I use Superhero for the majority of my investor education.

Superhero does not provide personal investment advice. Names have been changed and the interview edited for clarity.
